Guinea, officially the Republic of Guinea, is a coastal country located in West Africa. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Guinea-Bissau to the northwest, Senegal to the north, Mali to the northeast, Ivory Coast to the southeast, and Sierra Leone and Liberia to the south. It is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry, after its capital Conakry, to distinguish it from other territories in the eponymous region, such as Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.At the census held on 1 July 2025, Guinea had a population of over 17.5 million and an area of 245,857 square kilometers (94,926 sq mi).
Our QTH - Auberge du Lac de Koba
Lac de Koba is situated in a peaceful and green environment. The lake was artificially created during the Sékou Touré era to irrigate agricultural land. The former sugarcane fields have now largely been converted into rice fields. Around the lake, you will find tropical vegetation and palm trees, while further towards the coast there are also mangrove areas.
Activities include trips by pirogue/canoe, kayak or pedal boat, walking along the lakeshore, birdwatching and fishing. The lake is home to several fish species, including tilapia and catfish.
Capital city Conakry
The contrast between Conakry and Lac de Koba is striking: Conakry is a very busy, densely populated port city located on a long, narrow peninsula along the Atlantic Ocean, while Koba is rural and peaceful. The city is the political, economic and cultural centre of Guinea.
According to the preliminary 2025 census, Guinea has a total population of 17.5 million, while recent figures put the population of Conakry itself at around 3.4 million.
